Diagnosis of the Rosacea is done depending
on the signs and the symptoms of the patients affected by rosacea.
This is because the rosacea resembles most of other skin diseases.
Therefore,
when diagnosing for rosacea other diseases must also be considered
such as,
• acne
• contact dermatitis
• eczema
• lupus
• sarcoidosis
As we know that there are some of the particular variants of this
disease such as ocular rosacea (which affects the eyes), a standard
classification can be developed to diagnosize the Rosacea. The
classification system uses diagnostic criteria which assesses both
primary & secondary features (signs & symptoms) of rosacea.
Primary Features:
Occurrence of one or more of the below mentioned features is a
indicate to the rosacea diseases.
• flushing
• persistent redness of the face
• bumps & pimples
• visible blood vessels
Secondary Features: These
includes the following,
• burning or stinging
• plaques - raised red patches of skin
• dry appearance to the skin
• swelling - edema
• eye irritation - e.g. burning or itching of the eyes, inflammation
of the eye lid
• affected areas beyond the face - features of rosacea can also occur
on other areas including the neck chest scalp & ears.
• skin thickening - phymatous changes such as rhinophyma
